GenMEP - Autorouting for MEP Systems

GenMEP uses advanced algorithms and data structures to algorithmically route MEP systems through Revit models without clashes. This revolutionizes building information modeling (BIM) productivity and enables fast coordination changes as they occur on a project. GenMEP uses standard Revit families for MEP systems to automatically create real content, which can also be leveraged using your existing Revit families. GenMEP recognizes other Revit content, linked files, IFC files, and point clouds as obstacles in the Revit environment.



BuildingSP has integrated GenMEP into existing modeling workflows. It has been designed to mimic how modelers create systems and perform coordination.


Using the batch editor and XML files, system route data can be saved and re-run without graphical user interface (GUI) inputs. This allows for fast re-coordination as the systems and models change on your project.


GenMEP uses algorithms to route with many routes being completed in under 1 second. Many times, users can work strictly within the Revit plan view, rather than by cutting custom sections and views to model the work.


The routing of systems can be controlled through parameters, the identification of routing spaces, and through the addition of intermediate waypoints along the route.

Point Cloud Compatible

GenMEP works directly in point clouds, without having to convert point clouds into Revit models. This means the process of sending a point cloud to a third party for conversion into Revit can be skipped or limited in scope.


The routing speed of GenMEP is dictated by the complexity of the model, not the file size. GenMEP is purpose-built for large, complicated models with many systems.


Designers. Designers start with a blank page and create systems for a future purpose. They deal with change on daily basis. Productivity and the ability to manage change are two key aspects of the design process. GenMEP addresses both of these through automation and intelligent workflows.

Subcontractors. The pre-construction timeframe for subcontractors is compressed with significant time and deliverable demands. In addition to initial modeling, subcontractors must also coordinate, submit, detail, and spool their modeled content. GenMEP increases productivity across both the initial modeling and coordination phases, reducing stress and allowing a focus on other critical job aspects.

General Contractors. General contractors have an overall responsibility for the project, including schedule, budget, and coordination. Automation increases productivity and changes the BIM workflow, reducing the number of hours spent modeling and coordinating. This can have a direct impact on the core responsibilities of the general contractor.

Owners. Owners use BIM to hedge their risk and understand the product being delivered to them. GenMEP facilitates the BIM process, lowering its cost. In addition, higher Levels of Development (LOD) are possible. With GenMEP, the full benefits of BIM are more easily attainable for projects.
