Hello, everyone. Time for our weekly roundup of articles at the intersection of BIM; artificial intelligence (AI); and the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) space.  Here goes:

Construction Dive reports that Autodesk is teaming up with Sony and 3D Robotics to create Site Scan, which they are calling a "drone to cloud solution." The program allows information gathered via drone to be sent directly into the cloud and then processed by Autodesk ReCap, where the resulting data can be used across multiple platforms for everything from project management to site inspection to constructing virtual models. What's more difficult – technology or technology integration?

ENR reports that savvy construction execs are turning to their childhood toys to create immersive 3D models. Imagine the fun that can be had with virtual models! They are using video game engines as the backbone to create virtual spaces: "The setup usually includes a map of the project model, with textures and visual elements that render and update in real time as you 'walk' through the scene." All that video game time as a kid wasn't a complete waste after all.

Throw a 3D printer into the mix and the virtual model could turn into a usable building in no time. The Presidency of the Council of the European Union is meeting in the Netherlands throughout the first half of this year, and their temporary meeting spaces have been largely constructed from 3D-printed elements. "The facade contains elements that are created from fully reusable, 3D-printed bioplastic sections... The alcoves hold a series of benches and walls — also created by 3D printing." Since it's a temporary facility, the use of 3D-printed technology allowed for a quick turnaround from conception to completion, and most of the elements are fully recyclable.

Of course, artificial intelligence continues to make headlines as Google's AlphaGohas now beaten the World Champion in the first of five rounds in Seoul. We've been keeping a close eye on how this game will play out. Even this first win spells a big step forward for AI research: "Top human players must rely on more than careful analysis to succeed. They play based on what the board looks like, how it feels. To beat these humans, a machine must, in some way, reproduce this magic." And the humans behind AlphaGo are confident they've done just that. Tune in next week for the final results.

The folks over at Tech Crunch are likely paying close attention to the outcome of the Go match-up. They posit that the enormous potential for AI technology has already been unleashed: "We are just beginning to see companies create systems that will ultimately outsmart the people and companies that created them, and create nearly unpredictable and unprecedented value in doing so."

But AI certainly doesn't have to be all serious. A post-doc student at MIT has created a "Twitterbot" that creates tweets based on Donald Trump's creative use of syntax. "The algorithm... learns the underlying structure of [Trump's] phrases and then spits out its own Tweets based on that structure." Go follow@DeepDrumpf.
